Outing to American Player's Theatre in Spring Green

Thursday evening, June 14, 2007

This will be a special treat for all who choose to participate. Because seat availability is limited, we encourage everyone to make reservations early for the Thursday evening outing on June 14. We will be chartering buses to take participants out to American Player's Theatre near Spring Green, Wisconsin. This is a lovely open-air theatre in central Wisconsin. Situated near the Wisconsin river and in close vicinity to the original home of Frank Lloyd Wright. If there is sufficient interest, it would be possible for some participants to go early and visit Taliesen.

The American Player's Theatre features plays by Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw and other classic English theatrical productions. Our visit on June 14, which will be the opening night for the season, will be a performance of Shakespear's classic comedy, "Much Ado About Nothing". The acting and costuming at APT is generally first rate, and sitting out in the evening at nearly the start of summer in this open air theatre is not an event to be missed. We will be reserving a limited number of tickets at a special discounted price of $25/seat.

But that's not all...

We will be catering an excellent dinner with selected wines, which will be served prior to the play in the gardens and walking areas below the theatre.

Transportation, Dinner and theatre tickets will be available for $50.00

Don't miss this event. Ticket availability will be limited to requests at the time of advance registration.

Depart Madison via bus at approximately 4:30 pm

Wine tasting and dinner beginning about 6:00 pm

Play begins at 7:30; returning to hotel by bus before 11:00 pm

Field trip to Stora Enso North America pulp mill in Wisconsin Rapids

Friday, June 15, 2007

Note:  Closed-toed shoes are required

Wisconsin has long been the center for papermaking in the United States, and it still has much to offer. The Consolidated Papers mill in Wisconsin Rapids was the largest producer of coated fine papers and supercalendered printing papers in North America when it was acquired by Stora Enso Oyj in 2000. Under current managment it has continued to maintain a strong tradition of technical excellence.

The Stora Enso Mill is located in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, 112 miles north of Madison.  The mill is part of the Fine Paper group and produces wood-free coated and specialty papers in medium to heavy weight ranges. Kraft pulp is used at the mill and is delivered via a pipeline from the Wisconsin Rapids Pulp Mill. The Wisconsin Rapids Mill has an integrated sheeting facility with a fully automatic storage and retrieval system for parent sheet rolls as well as finished inventory. Product in the plant is transported through the use of an automated guided vehicle system.

$40 includes motor coach transportation, lunch at the Hotel Mead, and the tour.

Depart Madison (Monona Terrace) at approximately 8:00 am.

Stora Enso Mill tour 10:00-12:00AM.

Lunch at Hotel Mead in Wisconsin Rapids 12:30-1:30PM

Approximate arrival back to Madison (Monona Terrace) 3:30PM.

Tour of the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin

Friday, June 15, 2007

For those who do not have time for the all-day field trip to Stora Enso, we have arranged for a tour of the Forest Products Laboratory. Established in 1910 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in Madison, Wisconsin, serves the public as the nation's leading wood research institute. FPL is recognized both nationally and internationally as an unbiased technical authority on wood science and use.

Today, more than 250 scientists and support staff conduct research on expanded and diverse aspects of wood use. Research concentrates on pulp and paper products, housing and structural uses of wood, wood preservation, wood and fungi identification, and finishing and restoration of wood products. In addition to traditional lines of research, FPL is responding to environmental pressures on the forest resource by using cutting-edge techniques to study recycling, develop environmentally friendly technology, and understand ecosystem-based forest management.
