The Department Mission

To offer education and research training of the highest quality in the field of microbiology to undergraduate students from the state and elsewhere. We also provide instruction in microbiology to students in other majors as a service to the University.

To conduct cutting-edge fundamental and applied research in the field of microbiology for the benefit of humankind and for the health of our planet.

To offer world-class education and research training to graduate students in microbiology for careers in academia, industry and elsewhere.

To provide service to the University and the public in matters that depend on expertise in microbiology.

To foster excellence in undergraduate teaching and teacher training through the WIsconsin Program for Scientific Teaching, where active learning, assessment, and diversity are promoted.

To promote the understanding of microbiology and microbiological issues in everyday life through outreach programs to the public.
