Our Vision

We aim to cement our position as the nation’s premier microbiology department, recognized for our superior research and training, innovative education and outreach programs, and strength as a vibrant, engaged community of scientists and learners. We are creating a place that is rich in opportunity and imagination where creativity and excellence can flourish, where excitement about science and education impels us to excel, where individuality and risk-taking are treasured, and where every person is welcome for the strength, diversity, and humanity they contribute to the community. Our programs are founded on excellence in individual achievement and the power of group activity. We focus on four areas:

  • Research: build upon our already strong foundation by attracting and retaining top talent, enhancing our facilities, increasing collaborative initiatives, and expanding our international presence.
  • Education: incorporate cutting-edge methods to ensure that our graduates are well rounded and fully prepared for the career of their choice. We will focus on mentoring and rigorous academic preparation, as well as professional development and training in teaching. We will include all members of the department in professional development programs
  • Outreach: engage the local and global community in learning about microbiology and about the importance of science in our lives.
  • Department Health: ensure that the department is a welcoming place to work, respected on campus and elsewhere for its openness, sense of community, and supportive environment.
